Necessary documents needed to purchase your pre-owned car

• Registration certificate (RC):

It's one of the most important documents that provide vital information about the car, such as its engine and chassis number. You need to check the state in which the vehicle was initially registered.

Also, verify that the acronym DRC (Duplicate Registration Certificate) does not appear on the certificate since it translates into a duplicate registration certificate.

If you notice that the used car that you are buying is a DRC, request to see the original invoice of the vehicle as it serves as a counter verification for the DRC.

Check if all the details mentioned on the RC book match with the physical appearance of the car.

• Insurance:

Make sure you get the insurance transferred to your name to process a claim in case of an accident. If you’re planning to transfer the policy, then check if the premium has been paid already.

Don’t forget to see the expiry date of the policy and if the seller has ever claimed the insurance. This will tell you if the vehicle was involved in an accident. Ask out if the car has third-party or comprehensive coverage.

• Form 32 and 35:

These documents are necessary to know if the previous owner has taken any loan to buy the car. Before lending out the money to the seller, ask him/her to give a copy of the no-objection certificate from the finance company to clarify that the entire loan is paid off.

• Form 29 is the notice of transfer of car ownership.

• Form 30 is the application for the intimation and transfer of car ownership.

• Form 28 is the No Objection Certificate that is mandatory when the car ownership is transferred between states.

• Forms 32 and 35 are needed when the seller has taken a loan to purchase the car.

• Service book:

• Road tax receipt:

• Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate:

As per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, every motor vehicle (including those conforming to BS-I/ BS-II/ BS-III/BS-IV as well as vehicles plying on CNG/LPG) is required to carry a valid PUC Certificate after the expiry of a period of one year from the date of its first registration.
